US flight delays, cancellations accelerate as air traffic controller shortages surge during shutdown

The U.S. government shutdown, now lasting 40 days, has caused severe air traffic control staff shortages, forcing airlines to cancel over 2,700 flights on Sunday. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that air travel could nearly halt before Thanksgiving (Nov 27) if the shutdown continues. The FAA has mandated flight cuts of up to 10% by mid-November due to safety concerns. Major carriers including United, Delta, Southwest, and American Airlines have already canceled hundreds of flights, with thousands more delayed. Retirements among controllers have sharply increased, and 13,000 controllers are working without pay. Economists fear a major hit to U.S. GDP, as millions of travelers may be stranded, and losses could reach up to $580 million daily. Senator Ted Cruz also revealed that over 500 safety complaints have been filed, linked to fatigue from the ongoing crisis.
