Ilhan Omar's response to question about marrying brother goes viral

Why It Matters

President Donald Trump has claimed that Omar allegedly married her brother, a long-debunked claim that came to prominence years earlier that she has repeatedly denied. Omar who has represented Minnesota in the House since 2019, has frequently been the target of anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim attacks tied to her Somali heritage, faith and politics.

She is one of the original members of “the Squad,” a group of progressive House Democrats that often clashes with Trump and members of his administration.

What To Know

In a Tuesday Cabinet meeting, Trump took issue with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and his handling of the state’s Somali immigrant population, accusing them of having “ripped off” Minnesota. In his speech, he also dug into Omar, calling her “impotent” and a “real terrible person.”

Omar reposted a clip of his statements about Minnesota and her, writing in a Tuesday X post: “His obsession with me is creepy. I hope he gets the help he desperately needs.” Her response has been viewed nearly 8 million times as of Thursday.

The official Rapid Response 47 White House team responded to her post, writing: “Why did you marry your brother.” Trump has repeated this debunked allegation before, writing on Thanksgiving: “Ilhan Omar, always wrapped in her swaddling hijab, and who probably came into the U.S.A. illegally in that you are not allowed to marry your brother, does nothing but hatefully complain about our Country, its Constitution, and how ‘badly’ she is treated, when her place of origin is a decadent, backward, and crime ridden nation, which is essentially not even a country for lack of Government, Military, Police, schools, etc.”
