The fiery, 155-pound clash was not shy of drama as it brought to an end a year filled with a hostile build-up and vile trash-talk. But on the 6th of October at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nurmagomedov and McGregor fought a feral fight, with Conor becoming arguably the first to win a round against the typically flawless Khabib, en route to a fourth-round loss via submission through a face crank.
Nurmagomedov, in the moment, appeared to keep hold of the submission even after McGregor had tapped and, rather than celebrate, he mounted the fence of the Octagon at jumped at some of McGregor's entourage, who were cageside at the time. Now, in a recent interview, the retired former UFC champ has said what he regrets most about the event.
Khabib Nurmagomedov Reveals His One Regret From UFC 229
As opposed to continuing the bitter feud between the two teams, Nurmagomedov explained that, with hindsight, it would perhaps have been better for him to ignore McGregor's friends on the front row. "Our prophet Muhammad, he teach us how to deal with our wives," Khabib said during a recent talk at the Miftaah Institute. "Don’t beat them. No. Ignore them. When something happened, first of all he waited several seconds. He ignored them."
And so Nurmagomedov believes it would have been better to give McGregor the same treatment. "I know when I go there this guy is going to talk trash. And I’m like, what do I have to do? I am a Muslim. Ignore him. Make him feel like woman."
"It was a very emotional moment, and I don’t think it was a good example,” Nurmagomedov said of the aftermath.
"But it happened. Sometimes we never know how we’re going to act if something happens. You can sit, watch, eating popcorn, and you can judge people: 'Oh this guy’s bad, this guy’s not bad.' But when you gonna be in this place in time, you never know how you’re going to act."
"People ask me, do I regret? I was planning to go to the fight, in my mind it was like I’m going to war," Khabib finished. "But I never know what’s gonna happen, how it’s going to finish, nobody knows the future. It is what it is, it’s happening."
