Two New Models, Two Distinct Advantages
At the core of this update are two new models: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking.
GPT-5.1 Instant is designed for daily interactions. It has a default style that is more enthusiastic and conversational. It's not only quicker to respond but also remarkably better at following instructions. The introduction of the "adaptive reasoning" mechanism is a game-changer. It allows the model to allocate more thinking time to complex tasks like math problems and programming, while still providing swift answers to simple questions.
GPT-5.1 Thinking, on the other hand, is optimized for advanced reasoning. By intelligently managing thinking time, it can analyze complex issues in depth and shorten the waiting time for users. The text it outputs is clearer and more accessible, with fewer technical terms and obscure expressions, making it easier for ordinary users to understand complex technical concepts.
Personalization at Its Finest
To meet the diverse needs of users, the GPT-5.1 series has expanded its personalized preset functions. There are now eight style options available, including Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical. OpenAI is also conducting an experiment that allows some users to fine-tune the simplicity, warmth, and emoji usage frequency of the responses in the settings. The system can even sense user preferences and proactively suggest setting updates for a seamless experience.
A Gradual Rollout Plan
According to OpenAI's release plan, GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking will first be rolled out to paid users of ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Go, and Business. Free users will gain access gradually after that. The API interface will be updated later this week. To ensure a smooth transition, the original GPT-5 model will be retained in the "Legacy Models" drop-down menu for paid users for three months.
