Kate Beckinsale, a Hollywood actress famous for her roles in “Pearl Harbor” and the “Underworld” series, recently made a rare tearful appearance on social media to directly address malicious criticism regarding her appearance and drastic weight loss. She confessed that this was not due to so-called “self-discipline” or intentional dieting, but rather caused by the immense heartbreak and trauma of losing loved ones in succession.

In the video, Kate Beckinsale began with a choking voice, lamenting, “2025 has really, really been so hard.” In the footage, she paused several times to wipe away tears, revealing that after saying goodbye to her stepfather over a year ago, her mother passed away from cancer earlier this year. The consecutive blows nearly broke her. She sorrowfully stated that witnessing loved ones suffer and die alone makes one lose even the sense of “hunger.” She emphasized that this is not anorexia or a choice to starve, but rather that her body seems to have completely shut down, pointing out that this is the aftermath of shock and trauma.
Previously, Kate Beckinsale had faced a barrage of negative comments online for her emaciated figure. She had publicly clapped back, urging the public not to make judgments without knowing the truth. This released video marks the first time she has fully revealed the personal tragedy behind the controversy over her appearance. She disclosed that after battling stage 4 cancer for over two years, her mother ultimately succumbed to the disease. Beckinsale expressed her deep sorrow, sharing that she still instinctively wants to text her mother in the early hours of the morning, only to suddenly realize that she will never receive a reply again.
In fact, Kate Beckinsale experienced the pain of death and separation at a young age. Her biological father, actor Richard Beckinsale, died suddenly from a congenital heart condition in 1979 at the age of only 31, when she was just five years old. She has admitted in interviews that it was a “huge loss that was hard for her young self to bear.”
At the end of the video, Beckinsale earnestly stated: “Everyone’s physical and psychological reactions are different after watching a loved one die in pain.” She called for understanding instead of blame from the public, hoping that by sharing her experience, more people will face the profound impact trauma can have on the body and mind.
