Speaker welcomes Ukraine’s President and reiterates his support

Sir Lindsay Hoyle greeted President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with a hug and told him the House of Commons ‘is at one’ with Ukraine.

The Commons Speaker reiterated the support of MPs for Ukraine during a flying visit by the President to Parliament.

Mr Zelenskyy requested a meeting with Sir Lindsay and the Lord Speaker to provide an update on defence cooperation.

He thanked the Speaker for travelling to Ukraine in March with his counterparts from across Europe to commemorate the third anniversary of the Bucha massacre – one of the gravest atrocities on the people of Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022.

Sir Lindsay said the way the people of Bucha had been treated was ‘unimaginable’, and he reassured the President: ‘The one thing you can always guarantee is unity of the House of Commons – we're at one with you.’

He said he was ‘honoured’ that Ukraine’s Defence Minister Rustem Umerov had attended the Commons’ Armed Forces Day flag-raising event earlier on Monday.

The President said he was ‘thankful’ for the military support provided by the UK, which has included the training of more than 58,000 Ukranian soldiers over the last three years - as well as pilot, maritime and specialist support training from the UK and 13 partner nations.
