Tensions are high between Tajikistan and the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
Tajikistan is a secular (not Islamic) government with strained relations with the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. Millions of Tajiks live in the border region of Afghanistan and speak Persian. Historically, Tajikistan has supported these Afghan Tajiks who oppose the Taliban.

The images showed construction progressing steadily, including roads leading to the base, which was located at an altitude of 13,000 feet and included watchtowers and troops from both countries.
However, China immediately denied the news, stating that China "has no military bases in Central Asia."

After gaining independence from Moscow in the 1990s, Tajikistan experienced a brutal civil war, during which Rahmon came to power. The country maintains close ties with Russia , which maintains a military base in Tajikistan.
