Though widely considered to be a masterpiece, one disappointing element regarding The Bride of Frankenstein has always been that it isn’t actually the Bride’s story. That works wonderfully for the narrative, but as the one classic female monster in Universal’s collection, it would’ve been great to have the film be about her.
Well, in Gyllenhaal’s stylish tale, that will indeed be the case. And more exciting? According to the filmmaker, her monsters are going to be allowed to be quite monstrous.

While speaking with Empire, Gyllenhaal stated, “I believe that every single one of us has a monstrous vein inside us. And by monstrous, I mean really monstrous. I mean terrifying to look at. You keep it hidden. And so in my story, the monsters are monstrous. Even in the trailer, they do really awful things, and that’s just the beginning of it, honestly. And at the same time, they are heroes. And I hope that they’re relatable, even if they’ve been brought back from the dead. They’re in a lot of pain, like all of us are.”
As a monster-kid, that sure gets my undead heart beating. And based on the trailer, in which we see Christian Bale wailing on some foolish sap, it certainly looks like we can expect Gyllenhaal’s monsters to get truly monstrous.
In The Bride!, we arrive in 1930s Chicago, where Frankenstein’s monster (Bale) asks Dr. Euphronius (Annette Bening) to help create a companion. They give life to a murdered woman as the Bride (Jessie Buckley), sparking romance, police interest, and radical social change.
The film also stars Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko), Penélope Cruz (Murder on the Orient Express), and Peter Sarsgaard (Orphan).
The Bride! rises in theaters on March 6th, 2026 from Warner Bros. Pictures.
