US President Donald Trump stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping has assured him that China will not take any action against Taiwan during a Republican administration. This statement has drawn international attention.

In an interview with the American program "60 Minutes," Trump revealed that this assurance stemmed from his meeting with Xi Jinping in South Korea. Trump pointed out that the conversation focused on US-China trade issues and did not specifically discuss Taiwan, but he was "very confident" that China would not take military or other action against Taiwan during his presidency. Trump relayed, "He (Xi Jinping) and his team made it very clear, 'We will absolutely not take any action during President Trump's term because we know the consequences.'"

Trump did not directly answer whether the U.S. military would intervene to defend Taiwan if China attacked, but he said with reservation, "If that day really comes, you will know the answer, and Xi Jinping knows very well what that is." Observers believe that his remarks continue the U.S.'s consistent policy of "strategic ambiguity."

Under the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, the United States must ensure that Taiwan possesses the capability to defend itself to prevent China from unilaterally altering the status quo. The Chinese Embassy in Washington responded that China "will never allow any force to separate Taiwan from China."

This statement indicates that the relationship between the US, China, and Taiwan remains delicate under the interaction between Trump and Xi, and Washington's policy toward Taiwan maintains a balance between flexibility and vigilance.
