The track and field competitions at China's 15th National Games produced both a tactical upset and a familiar demonstration of dominance in Guangzhou on Sunday.
In the men's 800 meter final, Guangxi's Liu Dezhu came in as the national record holder and did what front‑runners do, pushing the pace from the starting gun. Zhejiang's Xi Xiaoheng, meanwhile, saved his energy for the closing lap.
Xi bided his time and then unleashed a decisive sprint in the home straight, overhauling Liu and crossing the line first in 1:45.48. That time not only clinched National Games gold for Xi, but also broke the national record previously set by Liu.
The women's shot put final showcased vintage Gong Lijiao. Making her fifth appearance at the National Games, and already a four‑time champion, the Olympic titleholder set the tone with a second attempt of 19.53 meters that moved her into the lead.
Hebei teammate Zhang Linru produced a personal best of 19.47 meters and Ma Yue threw 19.33 meters, but Gong had the last word, uncorking an effort of 19.68 meters on her final toss to seal a fifth consecutive National Games crown.
