'Avatar: Fire and Ash' Global Box Office Tops 1.1 Billion, China Is Largest Overseas Market

The Hollywood blockbuster *Avatar: Fire and Ash* (also known as *Avatar 3*) has delivered a strong performance at the North American box office, currently reaching $320 million. Thanks to outstanding results in overseas markets, its global box office has successfully surpassed the $1 billion mark.

According to a report by the authoritative American entertainment media outlet *Variety*, the film has dominated the North American market since its release on December 19, 2025. It is projected to rake in another $20 million this weekend, marking the film's fourth consecutive weekend at the top of the box office charts. Analysts point out that the film has held the top spot since the Christmas holiday season last year. Apart from *Zootopia 2*, it has not encountered formidable competitors in the same slot. Entering 2026, as the North American market enters a lull period with a lack of blockbuster films to challenge it, its leading position has become even more secure.

regarding the Chinese market, while *Avatar: Fire and Ash* has achieved respectable results, it faces significant competition. Its daily box office was surpassed by the domestic film *Silent War* and the earlier released *Zootopia 2*, once placing second with 21.17 million RMB. According to data from Maoyan Pro, as of 14:00 on January 11, the film's total box office in China was 1.03 billion RMB (approximately $140 million). Although slightly lagging behind its performance in North America, China remains the film's largest overseas market. The overseas markets following China are France ($70.8 million), Germany ($67.72 million), and South Korea ($47.32 million).

The *Global Times* reported that although the global box office of *Avatar: Fire and Ash* has exceeded $1.1 billion, there is still a significant gap compared to the first two installments—*Avatar* ($2.92 billion) and *Avatar: The Way of Water* ($2.32 billion). This gap has left fans concerned about the future direction of the series following the trilogy.

The British newspaper *The Guardian* analyzed that Hollywood has a tradition where "box office performance determines the fate of a franchise." Director James Cameron previously stated explicitly that if *Avatar 3*'s box office results do not meet expectations, it may lead to the termination of the filming plans for *Avatar 4* and *Avatar 5*.
